During the 1980’s and the 1990’s the Chapter acquired four pieces of rolling stock. The first was Railway Express Agency car #534, the second was Santa Fe coach car #549, and the third was the last remaining Cone Mills box car of only 16 produced. The fourth car was Norfolk & Western caboose #55794. All of these cars were renovated and restored by the chapter members. The REA car and the Santa Fe coach were used on many of the steam excursion trains operated by the Norfolk Southern. When the NS ceased operating steam excursion trains in 1994 the chapter divested itself of the cars, selling the REA car,
the coach and the caboose. The proceeds of these sales were used in the restoration of the Cone Mills box car which was then donated to the
North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC, helping to relate the story of the textile industry in North Carolina.
