The Greensboro Chapter of the NRHS was founded in January 1977 and is operated as a
non-profit organization whose purpose is to collect and preserve historical data, artifacts
and equipment pertaining to railroads of all kinds and teaching the history of railroading
to the public. The chapter has set up railroad displays in a number of public locations
including the Greensboro Public Library, the Greensboro Historical Museum, and the
Civil Rights Museum. Of special note is the permanent historical marker commemorating
the Atlantic & Yadkin Railway which ran from Sanford to Greensboro and then to Mount
Airy. Chapter members created the message and paid for and erected the marker next to a
former A&Y trestle that ran across Lake Brandt, It is located on the Lake Brandt Trail in
northwest Greensboro.
